In fact, that Samara was one of the main centres for USSR’s Aerospace Programme. It was in Kuibyshev (former city’s name of the Soviet time) that “Vostok” rocket was built, in which the flight operation into the outer space was carried out for the first time in the whole history of human beings. It was here in Samara that the aerospace might and authority of the Soviet Union was established and had been sustained.

The Museum and Exhibition Centre itself serves as a basement to hold a life-sized missile (R-7). The rocket was manufactured for the training of Soviet Aerospace Troops in early 80s. After almost decades of its continuous usage it was given back to the factory where it was assembled, then all the instruments and equipment was removed and, finally, a real rocket prototype was obtained. The monument was unveiled in 2001 marking the 40th anniversary of the first manned flight operation and scientific mission into the open space. The rocket is almost 70 meters high, and its weight is more than 20 tons with its basement construction that is 3.5 times heavier. The monument shortly got well-known and then “Samara Space” Museum and Exhibition Centre was made open to public on 12 April 2007, where the legacy of rocket and missile engineering is presented. The exhibition includes the real large-scale products of space industry: the descent vehicles Yantar 4K-1, Resurs F-1, models of liquid rocket engines RD-108 and NK-33 for the N1 space rocket complex. Quite soon the museum become a mandatory thing to see in almost every tourist program. No doubt, the “Samara Space” Museum and Exhibition Centre is one of the most uncommon and stunning sights of the city.
