The Winter Palace in St. Petersburg was erected in the middle of the 18th century specially for Empress Elizabeth Petrovna according to the intricate project of the famous Italian architect Rastrelli in the style of magnificent Rococo. Upon completion of the construction works (1762), the palace complex consisted of thousands of splendid rooms, 117 magnificent staircases and almost two thousand windows and doors. So, since that time, the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg has become the main imperial residence until the well-known events of the bloody revolution of 17th year.

Throughout the time several buildings were added to the Palace: the Old and New Hermitage, the Small Hermitage, the Hermitage Theatre. Now the Winter Palace is a part of a famous museum complex – the Hermitage Museum. The architectural masterpiece is a magnificent three-story rectangular building on Palace Square. Dimensions of the palace are amazing: it is 210 meters in length, its width is 175 meters. It is impossible not to became totally filled with delight when looking at the decoration of the Winter Palace: a roof ornated with ancient gods and magnificent vases, exquisite sculptures of Neptune and Amphitrite, majestic white columns at the entrance, impressing central gates with cast-iron grilles and no less amazing side entrance gates.

Inside the Winter Palace the Great Throne and Concert Hall, the Malachite Lounge and many other chambers are open for tourists. And the Hermitage Museum, located in the Palace, is the largest and richest museum in the world, having rarest collections of paintings and antiquities.
